Dear Reader,

This website was originally created on September 22, 2007 for the purpose of recording the events leading up to the demolition or restoration of the historical Newport News landmark, Deep Creek pier. Employing that definition, this site served its purpose. You will find some interesting articles, photos, and essays about the Deep Creek pier and the surrounding neighborhood here. I hope you enjoy perusing them.

The city began the process of demolishing Deep Creek pier on March 27, 2008. On October 28, 2008, after a prolonged dispute with local watermen and citizens, Mayor Joe Frank and some members of Newport News City Council arrived at the decision not to restore or rebuild the Deep Creek pier.

Though this site is no longer active, in response to requests from students and a number of citizens,  it will remain open. If any further information comes to light regarding the Deep Creek pier, it will be published here.

Thank you to all those who contributed information and photos, and to those who continue to visit this site. If you wish to contribute further documents, information, articles or photos, contact me at deepcreekpier@yahoo.com.

Respectfully,

Site Administrator

I am a photographer from the Christopher Newport University Newspaper (The Captain’s Log) and was thinking about running an article about the Deep Creek Pier. I thought it would be interesting to have a picture of the Pier right next to a picture of what currently is there, but I do not have any pictures of when the pier was around. I was wondering if it would be alright to take one or two photos off this blog, or if you had any other pictures you are willing to give me. Any help you can offer me will be appreciated!

As one of the Deep Creek kids that grew up on Church Rd, I was so happy to find this site! Especially happy to find the essay and photos of Harris’s
Store! I still remember the store and the smells…..a country store smell. Also remember how very nice Mr. Harris was to us kids. My brother (who still lives on Church Rd) and I were just talking about old photos that he has of Harris’s Store! It was because of him that I started Goggling to see what I could find….and here you are, a little bit of childhood found. What a shame to have a key part of history disregarded because of short sited folks who didn’t care to save the pier. Thanks for this web-site!

I can remember as a kid going down to Deep Creek with my parents. My father’s family were watermen, and my Uncle Roy Morgan worked the water from there until his 70’s. What a shame Newport News doesn’t value the history it has. It was bad enough when NN originally wiped Warwick County off the map. And they want to claim fresh water sources they have no right to because they think more houses, apartments and businesses is the only way to survive. Thank goodness that the rest of the Peninsula remembers their heritage. And thanks for this website. I’m glad I found it before you took it down.
